The Meyer Foundation identifies and invests in visionary leaders and effective community-based nonprofit organizations that are working to create lasting improvements in the lives of low-income people in the Washington, DC metropolitan region, and works to strengthen the region's nonprofit sector as a vital and respected partner in meeting community needs.
Beyond its grantmaking, the Foundation offers programs and resources to help grantees strengthen their management and leadership, stabilize their finances, and increase their impact.
Meyer's grantmaking and other programs are guided by a three-year strategic framework adopted by the board of directors in December 2010. Under this framework, the Meyer Foundation seeks to support:
Leadership: Visionary and talented nonprofit leaders who are succeeding in meeting the needs of their communities.
Effective Organizations: Well-managed and sustainable organizations that can demonstrate impact and become anchors of their communities over time.
Long-Term Impact: Organizations and strategies that are working to achieve lasting improvement in the lives of low-income people, families, and communities and the social and economic systems that support them.
Grantmaking in four priority program areas—Education, Healthy Communities, Economic Security, and A Strong Nonprofit Sector.
The Management Assistance Program, which provides grants to help Meyer grantees strengthen their organizations' management and leadership.
The Exponent Awards, established in 2006 to recognize exemplary executive directors of Meyer grantees.
The Cash Flow Loan Program, through which Meyer provides short-term loans to grantees experiencing cash flow problems as a result of unexpected delays in funding.
The Community Conference Center at the Foundation's offices, which is available for use by grantees at no charge.
