Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer created the Meyer Foundation in 1944 with a broad charter that was appropriate given their wide-ranging interests and eclectic lives. The Foundation gave a total of $437,328 to 54 recipients from 1945 through 1949. While the foundation was created with a broad charter, the Meyers each had special interest areas, which have been reflected in the Foundation's giving ever since they stepped down in 1950. Eugene Meyer had a special interest in medicine, mental health, and law and justice. Agnes Meyer was dedicated to raising the quality of life in her community, paying special attention to public education, young children, and social services.
