Special Announcement! An Update on the Meyer Staff Team

January 7, 2016

We’re pleased to announce that Julian A. Haynes and Amy Nakamoto will join our staff as program officers on January 19. As part of the Foundation’s strategic plan, which was announced last month, Julian and Amy will work to expand Meyer’s grantmaking in suburban jurisdictions. Julian will be focused on Prince George’s and Montgomery counties in Maryland, and Amy will focus on Northern Virginia.

Fully implementing this new staffing approach will take several years, and in the interim both Julian and Amy will also work with some organizations in DC, based on their areas of expertise. Here is a brief summary of their background and experience; longer bios are on our website.

Julian A. Haynes

Julian comes to Meyer from Achieving the Dream—a national reform network dedicated to community college student success and completion—where he was an associate director of programs and policy from 2013 to 2015. In that role he managed the national expansion of the Working Families Success Network. Prior to Achieving the Dream, Julian was a program associate on the education team at the Kresge Foundation, where for three years he helped manage a national portfolio of grants supporting efforts to increase post-secondary degree attainment for traditionally under-served students, and a project coordinator with the United Way of Dane County in Madison, WI.

Julian has a bachelor’s degree from Morehouse College and a master’s in nonprofit management from Milano The New School for Management and Urban Policy.

Amy Nakamoto

From 2006 to 2014, Amy served as executive director of DC SCORES — a leading afterschool organization that offers more than 1,500 students from low-income families opportunities to develop their self-expression, physical fitness, and sense of community. During her time at DC SCORES, Amy’s leadership was recognized by the Harvard Business School Club of DC, the Center for Nonprofit Advancement, and the Meyer Foundation’s Exponent Award. For the past two years, Amy served as associate director of advancement operations at St. Andrew’s School in Delaware.

Amy has a bachelor’s degree from North Carolina State University and a master’s in education from the University of Pennsylvania.

Other Staffing Changes at Meyer

As the Foundation implements our strategic plan with an expanded program and communications team, two staff members will also be taking on new roles. Karen FitzGerald, who joined Meyer as a program officer in 2001, has been promoted from senior program officer to program director. In addition to supervising our new program officers for Maryland and Virginia, Karen will manage the Foundation’s DC portfolio of grantees. Maegan Scott, who joined Meyer in 2008 and currently serves as program and communications officer, has been promoted to serve as program officer for Meyer’s new Organizational Effectiveness Program and our other capacity-building work. An updated staff listing and full bios for Karen and Maegan are available on our website.

We’re fortunate to have a strong team with members who were ready to take on new roles, and grateful that our program officer search produced two outstanding additions to our staff. We look forward to working with you in 2016!
