Tori O’Neal-McElrath is the Chief of External Affairs at the NAACP, where she leads the leverage strategy between communications, development, organizational positioning and membership. She has nearly three decades of executive level experience in external affairs and organizational development with a broad range of nonprofit organizations. Prior to the NAACP, she was Vice President of External Affairs at Demos, a New York-based think tank that produces policy research and voter protection litigation through a racial equity frame. She was also with Community Change in Washington DC as the Director of Institutional Advancement, where she created and implemented strategies to significantly increase the fundraising capacity and brand positioning of both the c3 and c4 organizations.
Tori was the founding principal of O’Neal Consulting, a full service organizational development practice, and held senior positions with The San Diego Foundation, Planned Parenthood Los Angeles, the United Negro College Fund.
A published author since 2008, her most recent work is a book is titled Winning Grants, Step by Step, 5th Edition, which was released in July 2019 by Wiley, and is used in classrooms across the country. She is also a contributing author to Nonprofit 101: A Complete and Practical Guide for Leaders and Professionals, 2nd Edition, released in August 2019 also by Wiley. Tori has served as an instructor and guest lecturer on various aspects of nonprofit management and fundraising at the University of California, Los Angeles and American University, and professional development conferences throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.
